ARCHBOLD.ORG • SUMMER 2018 11 THOUGH MOST KIDS will have broken bones at some point during their childhood, it can be a very scary time for a child and parent. Such was the case for Kyle and Courtney Carter when their 3-year-old daughter Kambell sustained a horrible leg injury while visiting a trampoline park nearly 100 miles from home. “We were overcome with fear, anxiety and worry when the accident hap- pened,” said Courtney, who was preg- nant with the family’s fourth child at the time of the accident. “Here was our tiny little girl in excruciating pain, and we were more than two hours from home. We knew we had to get her to a hospital quickly, so we immediately rushed her to Archbold Memorial Hospital’s emer- gency room.” Doctors quickly determined that Kambell had broken her femur. “We were told it was a terrible and unusual break,” said Kyle Carter. “In fact, several doctors actually came by to take a look, because it was something they had never seen.” According to the Carters, all the nurses and doctors at Archbold treated Kambell as if she was their own child. “A peace truly came over me once I saw the way all the Archbold staff treated Kambell and her injury,” said Courtney. But one doctor in particular made a lasting impression on the Carters. Brad Walter, MD, was the orthope- dic surgeon on call that day and was Kambell’s doctor. “When Dr. Walter walked into the room to examine Kambell, it was like God sent him straight to us,” said Courtney. “Dr. Walter assured us that he was going to take very good care of Kambell. He explained how he was going to surgi- cally repair her leg and reassured us that she would make a full recovery. And then he prayed with us. Our family is very spiritual, so that meant the world to us. And at that moment, we knew Archbold was the hospital where God wanted us to be.” After surgery, Kambell was put in a body cast to immobilize her hips and thighs. Courtney Carter holds her daughter Kambell while Kambell’s leg is bandaged. “We were given good directions on what she could and could not do, and then they sent us home,” said Kyle. “Within a matter of a few hours, we were in the emergency department, Kambell was having surgery and we were on our way home. It was truly unbelievable.” But for the Carters, the care did not stop there. “We received a phone call the next day from Archbold. They were call- ing just to check on Kambell,” said Courtney. “To say the doctors and staff at Archbold went above and beyond our expectations is an understatement. We will be forever grateful to them for taking care of our Kambell.” WEGOABOVE ANDBEYOND toput familiesat ease
