ARCHBOLD.ORG • SPRING 2019 3 Why I give One of the greatest honors of my life, thus far, is to have served as a board mem- ber and chairwoman of the Archbold Foundation. The wonderful thing about the Foundation is that all money raised is used to directly impact patient services and care in our community. I am honored to be on the ground floor of planning and creating the new inpatient hospice center at Archbold. Having inpatient hospice services will be a great blessing to so many patients and their families at the end of life. It will provide a loving, sup- portive environment in which people are able to spend their final days surrounded by family while receiving comfort and specialized care from hospice nurses and physicians. The John B. and Elizabeth V. Wight Inpatient Hospice Center will complete the circle of compassionate care that is the mission of Archbold and at the heart of our wonderful community. I give because I know my donation makes a difference in the lives of others. —Gina Shumake Quality healthcare: What does it really mean? In recent years, you have likely heard the words quality and healthcare used together in the same sentence. But what really is quali- ty healthcare? And what is Archbold doing to ensure that you receive the best-quality healthcare possible? Quality healthcare is our top priority. And it’s a collaborative effort. We begin our day at Archbold with a quality and safety huddle that includes over 40 team members from various departments— executive and senior leadership, nurse managers, and support staff. We have other daily huddles to discuss quality and safety in specific departments in greater depth. Our medical staff has various committees with a sole focus on continual quality improvements. Our staff completes an annual Culture of Safety survey, and we use the results to target specific areas for improvement. We also discuss quality and safety with our board of directors. We voluntarily participate in accreditation surveys and programs that hold us account- able. In late 2018, Archbold Memorial Hospital and Archbold Health Services once again earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval™ for accreditation by demonstrating compliance with national standards for healthcare quality and safety in hospitals. The re-accreditation recognizes Archbold’s dedication to continu- ous compliance with The Joint Commission’s standards. We also participate in the national Hospital Improvement Innovation Network on patient safety improvements. We’re proud of our accomplishments, and we’ve been recognized for our efforts. Georgia Trend magazine recently named Archbold Memorial Hospital and Archbold’s Grady General Hospital as Top Hospitals in Georgia again. Grady General actually landed the No. 1 spot on the Top Hospital list and is the highest-ranked small hospital (fewer than 100 beds) in the state of Georgia. At Archbold, quality healthcare is much more than a common industry phrase. It’s about providing the best possible care in a safe environment and in a cost-effective manner—to every patient, every time. J. Perry Mustian President and CEO, Archbold Medical Center
